The Humming bird: future of SEO

Google has announced a new algorithm in September 2013 after about almost a decade, affecting ninety percent of all the search results.  Unlike Penguin and Panda updates, the Hummingbird operated on a query by query basis, affecting the complex searches rather than where websites rank for keywords.

    What is Hummingbird?

Hummingbird has been designed to deliver more intelligent response to queries of users such as “who”, “why”, “when” etc. instead of providing series of URLs corresponding to a sequence of keywords. This will be specifically be helpful when compiling long tail search terms, as it reflects Google will identify the concept of long phrases and not only the keywords. This would reduce the time required to search for the desired results.

The algorithm highlights Google’s emphasis on putting less significance on PageRank and more on the quality and relevance of content on the websites and blogs.

How Hummingbird alters what we view on Google?

With the Hummingbird introduction, Google is encouraging semantic searches in its determination to become the answer engine. Users can easily perform the following:

    •    Compare two items mostly the grocery items like butter vs. cream cheese, cabbage vs. broccoli etc.
    •    There is no need for third party websites now. For example when searching for an actor, band or similar, the users can simply enter the query in the search tab “ Lady Gaga Albums” and will be presented with list of lady gaga albums below the bar.
    •    Knowledge graph is another new aspect of Humming bird update. The search results will also bring information in the knowledge graph. For example, if a user types Neil Armstrong, they will find a paragraph of basic information about the person.

How to modify SEO strategy in the light of humming bird update?

Humming bird update is another step away from relying on keyword heavy content and a reminder that SEO professionals can no longer rely on the keywords that bring visitors to the websites.
Google wanted to make sure that its new search product has a competitive edge and is fully armed to reply the conversational queries as its competitor Siri.

SEO professional should be highly conscious about the quality content with the decline in the volume of short tail searches and prevalence of long tail conversational phrases. SEO is going to be more meaningful by delivering high quality and reliable answer instead of focusing on the keyword frequency.

If you believe that SEO will be dead, dismiss it immediately. In reality nothing is going to change in the ranking ways except the revival of long tail keywords. Please note that:

    •    Genuine and engaging content is still the king.
    •    Keywords will need to be place very carefully and used moderately.
    •    Legitimate back links earned through proper SEO are still significant.

We have to understand what Google loves in order to stay comfortable with the new algorithm.
By interpreting the changing search trends in an effective manner, SEO campaign can be made much more successful.
